Tips on Bathing, Ears, Eyes & Nails

Bathing

When you bath your dog, you should always use a soap-free natural shampoo. A dogs skin is six times thinner than our own, and more sensitive. Never use human preparations on their skin and never use disinfectants such as tea tree or eucalyptus oils.
Harsh detergent-based shampoos will strip the oils from the coat and cause the sebaceous glands to secrete extra oils, often resulting in dermatitis.
If drying your dog, always use a cool hairdryer and it is best to brush while you are drying.

Ears and Eyes

Check your dogs ears and eyes regularly for any discharge and build up of dirt. To clean the ears, use a dry, clean ball of cotton wool and wipe any dirt away.
Only use commercial ear cleaning products if they have been recommended by your vet, as they can cause irritation.

If eyes need washing out always use a warm saline mix, never just water and no cleaning products.

Clipping nails

Clip your dogs nails once  every six weeks or so. Some dogs will never need clipping, especially if they walk on bitumen. Clip the nail aiming straight upwards, make sure you avoid the area that contains the blood vessel and nerve.
Make sure you use a good quality pair of nail clippers.
